Role Description: Chief Analyst

Organization: Asiana Fund & Dani Family Office

Role Summary

Asiana is a Category II AIF with Mr. Jalaj Dani (one of the promoters of Asian Paints, India’s largest paint company) as the sponsor. The fund has a term of 11 years from the first close, which was in February 2023. Asiana seeks to back ventures that are category creators, leverage technology, have a path to market leadership, and focus sharply on building sustainable and enduring businesses.

The fund’s investments span various stages of evolution—from seed stage to growth stage—and include both unlisted and listed spaces. Additionally, the Dani Family Office may engage in opportunistic short- to medium-term investments on a case-by-case basis.

Role Overview

The Chief Analyst will play a crucial role in executing Asiana’s investment strategy and building the fund’s capabilities during its formative years. Reporting to the Chief Investment Officer, this role involves working closely with the Investment Committee (IC) and providing consistent support in evaluating deal flow, analyzing deployed investments, and tracking the relevant ecosystem of ventures and sectors to enhance Asiana’s and the Dani Family Office’s knowledge capital.

– Reportee: Junior Analyst

– All members of the Investment Committee
– Business Support Teams at Dani Family Office
– Relevant team members at each of the fund’s investee companies
– Founders, large investors, other family offices, investment bankers, VC and PE funds

Key Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Deal Flow Management:
– Evaluate Investment Proposals:
– Manage the preliminary funnel of the deal flow (approximately 5-12 proposals per month).
– Build relationships with founders, investors, funds, and I-bankers to ensure a relevant deal flow.
– Engage in discussions with stakeholders regarding proposed deals.
– Develop a first-hand understanding of the SWOT based on an evaluation of the founders, potential market size and growth, product-market fit, stage of evolution, competition, and other relevant factors.
– Model financial outcomes and valuation scenarios based on estimates of future cash flows and industry benchmarks.

2. Segment Analysis / Listed Scrips Analysis:
– Research Business Segments:
– Identify and research business segments and opportunities of interest to the fund.
– Explore public market investment opportunities from a strategic or opportunistic viewpoint.
– Build historic analysis of the segment.

3. MIS and Investment Analysis:
– Analyze Deployed Investments:
– Build and maintain relevant MIS for analyzing deployed investments and discussing business performance with investees and IC Members.
– Compare existing investee performance against plans, highlighting issues for further discussion with the investees.
– Conduct periodic competitive benchmarking of existing investee performance.
– Evaluate and discuss key business parameters with investee company personnel to identify focus areas for improvement.

Ideal Experience:
– Qualifications: MBA / CA / CFA
– Experience: 5-7 years of experience in a brokerage, fund, VC, I-bank, or bank. The candidate should be adept at assessing and analyzing a wide variety of businesses and processes to identify investment or business process improvement opportunities.
