About YC
Y Combinator is the leading startup accelerator for entrepreneurs. Since 2005, YC has invested in over 4,000 companies, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Stripe, Reddit, Instacart, DoorDash, and Coinbase. Today, YC has built the most powerful startup community in the world alongside the products and programs to support founders for the life of their company.
About the team
We are a lean and ambitious team that helps produce high-quality storytelling and educational content consumed by founders around the world. We publish essential startup advice, founder stories, and exclusive looks inside Y Combinator and the startup ecosystem. We’re a group of technology optimists who believe entrepreneurship is one path to building a better world — the ideal candidate shares that passion and will use it to produce the most engaging and informative content for our audience of YC alumni.
About the role
We are looking for a Content Manager, YC Community to join as an integral part of our growing team. This role is a key member of the Outreach team, which owns all written, video, and audio content for YC, as well as the marketing and comms functions. This person will help build curriculum materials for our post-batch programs, including the YC Series A Program, Post-A Program, and YC Growth Program; a long-term editorial strategy for our internal platform for alumni (nearing 10,000 total founders); and our quarterly alumni newsletter. This person will work closely with top YC founders, YC executives, and team leads, and collaborate closely with the Senior Director of Communications. The right candidate is passionate about storytelling and startups, a clear, persuasive communicator, a natural project manager, and deeply curious — going deep to learn unfamiliar topics.
Responsibilities
- Build and maintain write-ups on various aspects of company-building to accompany program sessions; write-ups will be used for the YC Series A Program, Post-A Program, and YC Growth Program curriculum.
- Attend all Post-A and YC Growth Program sessions in order to improve the curriculum based on learnings from each session. Founder contributions will also be used to improve the curriculum.
- Conduct interviews with founders and executives and produce summaries of the most useful insights and tactics, with minimal oversight.
- Repurpose select content from the curriculum on the YC knowledge base, as well as publicly on the YC blog and YC Startup Library.
- Copy edit all content published on the YC’s internal knowledge base, including early-stage and growth-stage advice.
- Create original content for the quarterly alumni newsletter using the skills you’ve honed, including research, interviews, writing, editing, and publishing.
- Curate content for YC’s internal platform for alumni.
- Discover new content ideas by staying well connected to the team at YC and the YC founder community, and staying up to date on tech news.
What you’ll need
- 5-10 years of experience writing and/or editing; experience as a documentation writer would translate well
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and time management while balancing multiple projects
- Structured thinker
- Naturally fast-paced and highly productive
- Can communicate complex ideas in a clear, plainspoken way
- Contagious curiosity and passion for entrepreneurship and technology; able to quickly learn unfamiliar concepts (e.g. the ins and outs of engineering dynamics)
- Sees problems through a business lens; can identify what makes something interesting/useful to a founder-specific audience
- Experience communicating and coordinating with C-level executives and business leaders preferred, and can easily build rapport and trust with both
